social media (-), (1/2)

I don't want to be a downer and only post negative stuff, but i still want to talk about this.
Social media isn't social anymore. Its just "media" now.
In a discord conversation i was talking about how its hard to make any meaningful connections anymore.
The old advice of "post what you like and people will find you" doesn't work anymore.
That heavily relies on you already having a network or some existing connections, and if you don't have that, you're out of luck. Discord and Telegram suck because in order to find meaningful groups and connections you have to be introduced to a group in the first place (which doesn't work if you don't have any connections in the first place).
Twitter used to work for finding connections, but now its just a shell of it's former self. We missed out on it before it went kaput and never made any meaningful connections. But there's still a lot of people there so there's still a small chance of making connections there.

Mastodon, as nice as it is, lacks people- its really hard to find people with similar interests. Bluesky has a similar problem and is also run by venture capitalists. Cohost actively limits you from making connections. Tumblr is also imploding due to a shitty CEO.

With all of the prevalence of private group chats or discord servers or whatever telegram/matrix/signal have, it really feels like we're being left behind in a lot of spaces. Spaces that you can't get into unless you have connections, but you cant make connections because you aren't in those spaces.

And like, I just want to make friends :blobfoxcryreach:
or find people with similar interests
But you can't really do that now

@ReyCasting damn wholeheartedly agree with all of that

i don't think we've ever had a community other than a few scattered close friends we collected together in one discord server that nobody really seems intent on participating in
