could do with some advice perhaps...

just bought a cheap midi controller 🎹
because it's time to learn music production!

how the fuck does one do music? I honestly don't know, please send tips!

I'm working on a demo and need to compose some music for it, ... before revision starts on Friday 😅

things I know so far:

  1. I need a DAW, which I have. It's Rose garden.
  2. Approximately how midi files work, and how to convert them in to the right format for my demo
  3. How to set up a workflow to make it easy to sync with the visuals

things I don't know:

  1. How to compose music. like, how do I pick notes? how do I know what order they go in, what timing?
  2. what I don't know. seriously, what questions should I be asking right now?

excellent news: the cheap midi controller I bought today works perfectly fine with linux with zero setup effort! 🥳

There is a button that says "trans+" and it is my favourite button for the wrong reasons.

The buttons are all LED backlit if they are active, which sadly means that the default state is not "lots of cool lights" :(

okay, so I have learned some things!

I have been playing around with the midi keyboard for a little while now. I have composed a short melody (4 bars) that is in the key of D♯, and I know that that means now!

This feels like the beginning of knowing music theory :ms_music_note: :blobbee_happy:

@lexbailey anecdotally, we have composed music since 2007 and have soundtrack credits even on a few games released on steam and we still don't know music theory, so, 🤷‍♀️
