I was puzzled by the blacklight eye damage NFT yacht party story, because blacklights at parties, raves etc. are a thing - why was it a problem?

Turns out the party organisers saw some really expensive UV lamps and decided 'obviously we want those, because they are the most expensive and therefore the most luxurious'. They were fucking industrial disinfection lamps that you're supposed to wear PPE to use. Christ.

@ephemeromorph yup. unshielded UV-C lamps. absolutely sums up the NFT dude mindset though

@PsyChuan @ephemeromorph The thing that makes me the most baffled is like any actual event company that deals with sound, stages, lighting, etc will not even have those on their books to use. So either they hired someone who has more money than sense or they did it themselves.

@PsyChuan @ephemeromorph I know quite a few people in that industry (I volunteer at a furry con) and you normally hire the lighting and sound gear from the same company that installs/rigs it alll so it's either gotta be someone who has no idea what they're doing or these lights were somewhere else other than the main overhead lighting rig.
