It's so weird how brains work. I've had such a hard time getting my head around knots but since coming back home from camping and using the animated knots website for the steps (thanks @philpem!) they've actually been sticking???
Like I can do an Alpine Butterfly Loop and a Bowline from memory, and I'm pretty close to being able to do a Midshipman's Hitch as well. After that it's onto the Prusik Knot and I'll have learned most knots that I'll need for bushcraft/camping.
@dragonarchitect @philpem YEAH! those step by step pictures have really helped me! :)
@renbymon @philpem Btw if you want to level up your bowlines just the tiniest little bit into a quick-untie:
Instead of passing the end back through the loop to complete the knot, form a small bight and pass *that* through then cinch the knot down.
Same knot, but now with a quick-release that turns it into a simple half hitch that's loads easier to undo after the bowline's been tensioned for a while! π
@dragonarchitect @renbymon It's how I learned! I was up on the roof the other week replacing the pulleys, and had it up on my phone to remind me about some of the knots I don't use often.
@renbymon @philpem A few quick & hurried photos to illustrate the point. Passing the bight through to make the quick release, the knot after it's conched down, and how it looks after pulling the tag end to release it.
Next time I have to load up a moving van I'm using this and the trucker's hitch that I've seen my dad use but never knew was its own thing until a year ago to make tying everything down go a LOT faster to untie again.
@renbymon @philpem Animated knots website???
