Glad to learn that my flights to/from the USA will not involve any recent Boeing or ATR aircraft.

Seriously. Do not get on an ATR-72 if it's likely to encounter icing conditions.

@tryst We got an ATR-72 to Belfast a few weeks ago and it was... _okay_

Not sure I'd take another one though.

@renbymon They're absolutely fine... until they encounter icing, at which point they lose lift and fall out the sky.

@tryst @renbymon Sounds like the aircraft version of an Italian sports car.

@philpem @tryst @renbymon There's been a recent mega-article by Cloudberg on this matter, which might have been the source of the concern (and might be of interest to you).

Of course, the concerned person being Tryst here, I also wouldn't be surprised if they've been aware of the situation for decades at this point...

@Tvorsk @philpem @renbymon ATR-72 and its variants only recently made my shitlist after watching Mentour Pilot videos and then doing some reading. It joins DC-10 and V22 Osprey.

@tryst @philpem @renbymon Quite the justified shitlist.
Although, I was more uncomfortable about the surprise last minute substitute of a 737 Max8 in place of the scheduled Embraer than any of the times I had to knowingly board the -72 so far...

@Tvorsk @philpem @renbymon Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention that "anything by Boeing less than 10 years old" is also on my shitlist.

@tryst @philpem @renbymon

Mmmhmm... sadly, Boeing is long gone, that's "MD-D wearing Boeing's face" similarly to how we have "Avago wearing Broadcom's face" over on the IT side of things.

Dreamliners, the first cut-corner project under new management, began 14 or 17 years ago depending on how you measure, so might be good to expand the timerange a bit...
