I just learned that in the UK you're apparently taught to apply the handbrake when your car is stopped (e.g., at a red light) rather than holding the brake pedal and I am mystified. This is nothing that's ever been even vaguely suggested to me here by anyone in my 30 years of driving.

@pawcelot I was about to say “I don’t remember being taught that”, but I vaguely do.
Though it doesn’t make sense these days when you’re dealing with automatic transmissions and drive-by-wire systems.
I’m not sure how many people in the UK still learn how to drive manual.

@kootenay @pawcelot The majority here do still learn to drive manual (I learned and did my test in a manual a few years ago) and I was taught to put it in neutral and apply the handbrake for a long stop.

@renbymon @kootenay Ohhh, remembering the fact that most people drive stick there actually makes that make way more sense.
