BSD log

So, I don't remember why I did it, but I reinstalled FreeBSD on the laptop it was already installed on. This time, however, I used version 12-CURRENT instead of 11.2-RELEASE

I don't remember why.....but this time everything was a bit more streamlined and that may just be me having literally just installing it the day before and knowing what to do.

Also somehow I now have an emoji picker tied to a keyboard shortcut and like this is great and I'm not asking questions :3

BSD log

I also downloaded a USB image for DragonflyBSD last night (stock piling up on those sweet sweet install discs).

For shits and giggles I booted it up on my chromebook (Acer c720) and the keyboard worked(?!) but it didn't detect my wireless card....so.....that's something 🀷

BSD log

I may spend some time today trying to figure out why it didn't detect my wireless card and if I can figure it out I may do another BSD install :D

BSD log

oh wow this install is going great really happy with how everything is going send too- *crashes into kernel debugger*

....ha....hmmmm..... :blobnervous:

BSD log

me: "oh I know enough about linux. i should look in to other unix-like operating systems"
also me: "FUCK. WHATS A KERNEL UM. DID........but.....why would they include bugs in it? Why uhg why do crashes?? *sobs*"

BSD log

hmmmm

just installed a program I use frequently on linux into freebsd

on first run it fucked up my X server a bit, but restarting the program fixed it.

on the second run it made noise where on linux it was silent. i think it was supposed to make noise all along, but for some reason didn't on linux.

wtf

one weird (I'm assuming it's weird?) issue I'm having is that when I open a new terminal instance it drops me in / instead of my home dir

it's not a big deal, just weird 🀷

BSD log

#BSDFox

thinking back to that kernel panic I had earlier....

it's actually pretty neat that it dropped down into the debugger straightaway instead of just giving me a stack dump (i never had the kernel debug stuff installed for linux so I don't know what that would be like).

it's nice to think that "oh, if i were smarter I may be able to fix this and recover where i was", and it's even nicer to have the OS just give these tools to you so freely

BSD log

got automounting set up, a fuse exfat driver installed, and a few new commands to read up on!

today went a lot better than I anticipated it would, with regards to BSD :3

BSD log

#BSDFox

I was playing around with the live cd of DragonflyBSD and was able to patch together how to create a wireless interface over top of the actual hardware

(took me like 4 pages and 30-45min when it was actually all on one page, that I didn't take the time to fully read πŸ™„ [typical])

so now I'm installing DBSD on a flashdrive to see how well it would work on this laptop before I fully commit to an install

ayyyyyyy this post is from firefox running in DragonflyBSD!

The touchpad drivers in dragonfly are strange....or at least the one I have to use with my chromebook (cyapa)

No more two finger scrolling, it's now a scrollbar on the side of the trackpad. tap to click is enabled by default, but I have to put 3 fingers on the pad and then tap the finger that corresponds to the mouse button I want to click. it's a bit odd, especially when I want to change from left to right click quickly, but nothing that I couldn't get accustomed to :3

BSD log

#BSDFox

another weird thing about DragonflyBSD is that the X session I'm running in (as root) shows the "full name" for root as "Charlie Root" which is pretty strange.....right? :|

BSD log

#BSDFox

played around a bit and got my actual user set up more so I don't have to keep using root

working on getting xdm set up because gdm takes up so much space because it has to pull down the entire gnome shell @_@

BSD log

#BSDFox

so I can now start xfce4 by logging in through xdm (~/.xsession seems to be the one file that fixes all my issues in BSD haha)

however, starting up xfce4 through xdm seems to not set my LANG correctly (defaults to ANSI instead of UTF), but the only thing that seems to be effected by it is xfce4-terminal, which is easily fixed by manually setting it to use utf-8

BSD log

#BSDFox

was trying to compile godot on dragonflybsd last night and ran into issuesℒ️

if I can get Godot running on dragonfly (and if firefox doesn't run as trash as it does from the flashdrive) then I may move over to running dragonflybsd as my main driver

@zac really? wow! moving away from another bsd or from linux?

BSD log

@scarly I'd move from Arch Linux to DragonflyBSD on my chromebook :3

I'm just nervous because of the work involved backing everything up and then restoring to a new install

*plus* making sure performance is still good @.@
