@envgen i am legit kinda jealous of how authentic 80s you managed to achieve and id like to get some pointers from you if you wanna help me make stuff like that too

@squirrel i would love to, what exactly are you referring to?

@envgen like, everything about the this being track

starting with the drums, i have several drum sample packs and i can't get any of them to sound any good no matter what kind of reverb and filtering i put on them

@squirrel i think this one was all linndrum samples except the toms which are simmons sds-v sounds from a free vst called hexagon 85

i can send you some linn samples if you like

@envgen i have the linndrum samples and i cannot get them to not sound garbage

@squirrel oh ok turns out im lying to you

looking at the track now, kick drum has no compression but this sort of eq (pic)

snare has some tasty gated reverb on it (extremely important!!!) but no compression OR eq which is weird. i cant tell you how weird that is, i must have forgotten to compress the snare cos that's really weird for me

toms again have no eq but gated reverb and moderate compression

@envgen i dunno i just can't get a good deep sound out of anything

like i fucked around a bit to make this but i still think it sounds like garbage and i want to throw it out

i just don't think i can make anything decent anymore computerfairi.es/media/bKzBlLc

@squirrel these are both really good!!

with the first one i think the song might call for something a bit more... splonchy. like a simmons snare with that kinda "BRRLLllooooooo" sound

the second one is pretty good already but bring the snare up and boost the low-mids for the BOOF sound, and also double up every snare hit with a kick drum sound, but mix it just low enough that you can't really hear it but it's adding extra oomph to your snare

@squirrel ooh nice and punchy. nice and fizzy too. i guess what's missing is a crack, am i right?

i'd suggest mixing in another crackier snare sample in and compressing/shaping it so you mostly just get the initial transient CRACK sound and followed by the linn snare as the body

alesis sr-16 has some dang cracky snappy snares if you don't have anything cracky enough
