The various instances springing up are not doing a good job of selling themselves. Every one I visit has the same generic Mastodon frontpage and color scheme. If they even bother to tell me what's different about the instance from any other, it's buried behind a tiny half-hidden link.

@squirrelbutt Hah! So it's mostly about participating in the wider federation, but with a unique @ handle that folks on the flagship instance won't have? Sort of like a vanity license plate? 😄 A small but impactful thing!
@SabreCat yeah! but i also want to make it sure no bad stuff comes into our federated tl and make it pretty with some css
@squirrelbutt That's cool! I certainly look forward to the (perhaps near future?) day where these profuse instances are as colorful and varied as they are numerous.
Were you involved in setting up @computerfairi.es, then? What prompted your setting up a new instance instead of joining an existing one?
(I realize it's a whole new world out there, and what instances are even "for" isn't settled wisdom yet, heh)
