How are SSNs secure? It's such a short number, I feel like a random number generator could spit out a real one fairly easily, right?

prior to 2011 the first 3 digits were an area code and the last 4 were issued in a pattern
if you knew someone's place of birth and age it wasn't too hard to guess their ssn
