I... Uh... What?

mastodon.host crypto mining in the browser?

@troubleMoney hey @gled what's the processor.js thing on mastodon.host? See the toot this is a response to for a screenshot.

@gled @troubleMoney hmmm...

"You can help hosting the server by donating a few cpu cycles ( mining cryptocurrency ). Check your preferences !"

Is that a new addition? I missed it before.

Is it enabled by default?

Do non-users (i.e. me going to mastodon.host without having an account there) "chip-in" into the mining pool?

@rysiek @troubleMoney

yes it's new ( I started working on that a couple days ago ) and the mining part is not even activated at the moment, I'm still figuring out a few parameters / details ).

It is not enabled by default and not active for non users at the moment ( I may revisit that later ? ).

And since a couple hours, the JS code of the miner is not even loaded unless you actively request it in your preferences.

@gled @troubleMoney ah good! Thank you for the clarificaton. This makes much more sense now. :)

I would still make sure to communicate that with all your users, obviously. But it sounds much better.

@rysiek @troubleMoney
As usual you know, a lot of noise and misconceptions due to fediverse drama and my crazy ideas ;)

It is not the first time i get a wave of insults, and probably not the last. ( You should have seen the messages I received when people discovered we have full text search here, without even checking that function and the fact that it's limited on purpose, or the intense drama generated by the creation of @federationbot )

My bad too of course that I did not *explicitely* said to everyone in the fediverse that I was working on that. But I do believe now with the numbers I have in hand that there's potential. It could if users here on m.h are playing along cover around 50% of the cost of the server without impacting the users.

@troubleMoney Actually usng someone else's computer for crypto-mining while they acces your site, with their knowledge, may become an accepted way to pay for sites and raise money for charities online. I would rather that than bein served ads constantly, and even the advertising market has limits.
