chewing on an article idea for sweetdisabled, 'the spoonie guide to skincare'
which is... mostly philosophical
i'm trying to not be all "just buy shit!" about it, but also i feel that sometimes people are very all-or-nothing with skincare and like
half measures are ok
not being able to do everything "the best" is ok
the thing you actually use and do is always going to be better than the thing you don't use and do, and i think that's important
like.... will you always have the spoons to do a full 15 step korean skincare routine morning and evening? nope, most ablebodied people don't
but what you can do still counts
washing your face? great
washing your face once every two days? still great, still counts
and i think some spoonies get caught in the trap of "but i'm not THAT disabled so..." and honestly if some aid makes it so you can do it, there's no shame in it and you should be encouraged to do so
anyway i'm hoping i can say mostly philosophical stuff instead of WHY NOT JUST BUY SHIT because... i just feel like it's an important hurdle to be like "you're ok if you halfass shit"
like, my eye cream. is it the very bestest best with best reviews? ...i mean not really. why did i get it? because i think the rolly ceramic ball applicator is fun. and you know what? that means i'm actually using it.
the mediocre eye cream i actually use is always going to be better than the best one on my shelf
and tbh i think 90% of my self-care is bribery lmao
like, showers hurt. i need to still do them but they hurt because of body ouch.
but i can use a nice shower gel and one of those shower fizzies and make it nice enough that i can overcome that inertia of "oh god this is going to hurt" and actually... do the thing
the thing that i actually do > the things that i don't
self-care everybody! lmao
