man the tumblr purge still bums me out. it managed to nuke one of my fav blogs, thosenaughtyvictorians, and altho they've got a blogspot, there's just like two posts on it, not the repository of information
it wasn't even a hornt fav, but i just really like history for those moments when it's just - oh hey, people are people, and have been people
"nothing new under the sun", but without the cynicism, basically. you get to recognize the continuity there, and it becomes more real and present
@wigglytuffitout The good news is that most things are archived thanks to the Internet Archive (web.archive.org), but it's spotty at times and still less than perfect. :(
it's very easy to think of history as occupied by exclusively staid and stately figures, far-off and distant and only dignified, and it makes it all feel like they were less human and history is this far-off thing you shouldn't care about
but the little reminders that people were people -
cuneform tablets full of bad yelp reviews for an iron seller! pompeii graffiti that could fit in a modern truck stop bathroom! kinky victorian porn!
- make history real and present. and that's cool af!!!
