i only managed to learn about it from a 'history of the english novel' course i took in college and don't get me wrong. it's a fucking horrid book. don't torture yourself by reading it. but it also obviously took off because the man thinking he was writing this great tale of morality accidentally made something a lot of ladies were horny for and then wanted merch of LMAO
