One final note – for writers
I've heard the complaint made before that utopian fiction is boring because there's no conflict and that's why dystopian fiction is more interesting. And sure, that's a fair criticism. But replace utopian with eutopian, and that's something altogether different.
To reference Black Panther again (the movie specifically), Wakanda is a good vision of a eutopia. It's a place with fabulous technology, where people live good lives. Their needs are met and, as far as we see, there aren't any systemic problems with poverty or hunger. But Wakanda is not perfect and still contains numerous deep flaws. Those flaws are explored in the story and are the source of every major conflict which happens. At the end of the story, the flaws are still there, but efforts are now being made to address them.
So it's possible to have interesting conflict in a world which isn't a dystopia. If you want to write solarpunk fiction, this kind of eutopia is a good source of inspiration.
oh guess I should follow @undyne from this account huh
*waves* hi. Kara's co-front here
Neptune is unique among the major planets in one funny way: we knew it existed on paper before we knew it was in the sky ;=3
Percival Lowell tried the same trick for "Planet X" but, uh, it didn't work. Pluto wasn't it, and turns out Neptune's orbit was off model only because we hadn't estimated its mass correctly
🔴 so Lowell rediscovered Neptune, haha, typical
go eat some chocolate, Chara
uspol, ICE, tomorrow, +/-
Trump has called off the ICE raids tomorrow, in part because the plans for the raids leaked to the press and he realized his stormtroopers weren't going to get to, er, storm: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/president-trump-announces-delay-mass-immigration-raids-were-begin-sunday-n1020671
Also, check out that fucking tweet (linked in the article). He literally doesn't think of non-whites as human.
Bad ideas but they're good enough to warrant at least one (1) toot
Y'know how rainbow crosswalks are rad?
How cool would it be to source the paint and just gather together a group of tranarchists to go paint crosswalks in rainbow and trans flag colors?
And not just in the gay districts. Fuck that. EVERYWHERE.
anyway that's today's salt i suppose, and a reminder that the people who make fan content for you - fanfiction, fanart, fanmixes, etc. - do so for the low low price of nada, bupkis, and zero. please don't be pushy and entitled! please don't try to guilt trip them or harass them into giving you more free content to enjoy! definitely tell them how much you enjoyed it, and if you're genuinely worried about them, you can reach out in a kind way, but remember That's A Real Person Making This Stuff.
griping about gnome
[grab you gently by both shoulders]
listen, friend. error messages are not "clutter". they are not optional. they are not unnecessary. knock it off with this mystical black box shit and actually fucking print them to the console at the very least, yeah?
griping about gnome
open gnome-font-viewer on a .pcf.gz bitmap font
click "install"
button immediately changes to say "install failed"
messages emitted to stdout/-err: none at all
error information available in the UI: none at all
verbose mode cli option: does not exist
so how the fuck are we supposed to work on addressing the problem, then?
Animal death, asking for financial help
Today, we had to help our beloved cat, Miko, end her suffering and die. She was 12 years old. She had a long, interesting life for a cat and came with us to Germany all the way from America. She was our emotional support animal and we will miss her dearly.
She had a major infection in a milk duct, which eventually spread and left her unable to walk. We did our best to treat the infection, but she was quite old and unresponsive to treatment. Unfortunately, she accrued significant vet bills which I'm unable to pay off at this time.
The total bills come to 311 euros (351 USD). If anybody has anything they can spare to help, the best way is through paypal at paypal dot me / arrix Any additional funds we receive will be put towards adopting a new emotional support animal from a local, reputable shelter and related expenses.
Goodbye, Miko. You were the best.
Twitter, maybe leaving
well I got my own Twitter now (first tweet https://twitter.com/AlyxWoodward/status/1141827840008019968) so I guess I'll be on my bullshit there
bleh
I don't quite wanna ditch this account (seeing as how I've barely given it a chance) but I don't think I fit in here and nobody has taken notice of the kind of physical science nerd shit I wanna talk about
it sucks and I'm not happy but whaddya do
just try again somewhere else, like always
the reactions are pretty straightforward. aminoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal (or, 2,2-diethoxyethylamine, if you like) is turned into the formamide with propyl formate (why propyl formate? the reaction is carried out at reflux, suppose propyl formate boils at a high enough temperature to make the reaction work)
then the formamide is dehydrated to the isocyanide with the reagent you get from reacting carbon tetrachloride and triphenylphosphine. that's a trick a few uses (see the "Appel reaction")
okay, one more for the road
did the random word thing, and here's the first hit in _Organic Synthesis_ with the word "overflow". ("untidy" gave nothing at all)
synthesis of 2,2-diethoxyethyl isocyanide! well, that's a thing I guess. it probably stinks to high heaven (organic isocyanides are famously stinky)
ah yeah they even warn you:
Caution: All the operations must be conducted in an efficient hood because the isocyanide has an obnoxious odor.
