As for Dutch, "sorry" isn't used outside of small things like stepping on someone's toe, but there's "Het spijt me" for apologizing and "I leef met je mee" for empathizing. Probably others too, but at least it's better. =w=

"Es tut mir leid" for empathizing… and for apologizing as well >_>
of course you can always "beg for forgivness" — but often that almost assumes you will.
