do you like web 1.0? do you like old forums? good news: i still run one and you're invited. jul.rustedlogic.net/ we talk about basically nothing and it's real quiet but stop by and say hi

@Xkeeper Nice place! How long has it been around? My old forum started in 2006. It's all but dead now, except for me.

@Wayves end of July 2007 or so, but the roots of the forum go all the way back to 2001 or so

@Xkeeper Early 2000's were good times for forums. Masto is pretty good, but it's not the same.

@Wayves masto, twitter, reddit et al. aren't really replacements for forums in general xkeeper.dreamwidth.org/9872.ht

and yeah, the early-mid 00s were great for them. the decline started after that midpoint when sites started having comments sections en-masse and then got eviscerated by social media as we know it

@Xkeeper @Wayves The talking about this has been happening on at probably three places. (Mastodon, Twitter, Dreamwidth comments)
Some of the stuff that's been said might not be visible due to privacy settings, and further there's little possible interaction between people on different sites.

These places indeed don't work well for discussions.

Maybe it's partly because sites seem to encourage x-posting nowadays, but then the article mentions a bunch of places to go for what was one community.

@BatElite The forums were good for discussion but they aren't as easy to use on a phone.
