- mastodon eats gifs and shits mp4s, which ruins pixel art and makes animations super muddy. this is fine in some cases (like where mp4 was appropriate in the first place) but for traditional things it's aaawwwfffuuulll. i can't find a way to get the original gif either, RIP.
- mastodon ALSO strips APNG frames, so if you try to use that (now that browsers mostly support it), nope! you're still screwed. why is it re-encoding PNGs anyway?????? (and RIP to the original, again)

how the video looks if i hit "open in new tab" (literally invisible, gg chrome), in mastodon (blown up to well over 20x size i think), and a former apng of it. maybe that'll show up at normal size, idk
