I often have to ask because I simply didn't hear what they said.
It's often like I have to make very clear that it was ONLY because my hearing works differently and not because I'm actually "stupid". And I hate this.
Because not knowing/understanding all the things is totally fine.

You obviously never had to deal with all the nice tech-dudes who get aggressive whenever someone, who is not one of the guys, knows more than them. Or is bold enough to teach them things.
This is what many of us have to deal with all the time.

I expect with the popularity of Mastodon there will be pressure to add a ton of features to make it more like Facebook or whatever. This may be tempting, especially if you are a young developer and there are folks waving a lot of cash under your nose.
For any privacy related features I would pause and not rush into doing anything. If you get this sort of thing wrong then there can be a lot of bad fallout and you'll probably lose whatever popularity you might have had. A suggestion would be either to leave privacy alone and keep the fediverse as a purely public space, or to work with W3C on the ActivityPub spec to add encryption features.
A point about privacy is that if you add private keys to the servers and there are enough users then the Lavabit scenario is going to happen. Goons with firearms will show up and demand the keys, and they may be from the gubbermint or not from the gubbermint. It's better to keep the responsibilities and risks on the admins as minimal as possible.
Trying to go it alone and invent a lot of incompatible stuff isn't going to work well. What you end up with is a fractured fediverse, and lack of network effect means that users eventually return to the silos.

While far from addressing the underlying problems, a way to up/downvote sentences in Duolingo would be super useful. It's enough to see a sexist/heteronormative/cisnormative/annoying sentence once, let me practice that thing in a different context so I don't have to ragequit.

No that I had my little morning rant, I will go have my thesis printed and sent away. So I'm still in a pretty good mood (and scared, as usual).
@maunzikation Reminds me of the python video training I tried to watch yesterday but the guy used the BMI as an example for the whole lecture (and explained that it is for calculating if you are "too fat" or not). People always kill learning possibilites with shit like this.
You know, all those people who have to deal with this kind of shit don't need your advice on how to adjust to this hurtful and useless culture.
They do need you to use your mansplaining powers to educate your fellow white guys about how their attitude is creating a really bad atmosphere and is killing creativity and curiosity and is making people feel bad.
Soo, the ratio of people who just listen or contribute their experience, to mansplaining dudes who tell me to "just ignore it" (it = the awful atmosphere in tech-world that is killing curiosity and is keeping not-super-confident people from joining the club) is much better than on the birdsite.
But still... . Just ignore everything and everyone that hurts you? Wow, thank you guys, very helpful advice nobody asked for.

@Jules i love making assholes uncomfortable. i'm an autistic trans woman, so this isnt hard to do.
any time i encounter a thing i dont know i will just boldly declare it and ask for help. usually this works out fine.
but sometimes i get one of those assholes and i say "wow, youre really gonna shit on me for not knowing something? you have the opportunity to see someone understand/discover/see something for the first time and you spend that being an asshole instead?"

A word of warning to anyone upgrading to Mastodon 1.3(.1)!!!
Starting with 1.3(.1) Private posts will federate! But they don't do so securely! Warnings are built in but be aware that if you have followers on GNU Social, Friendica, or postActiv then they will **NOT** know that your post is marked private/followers-only!! And they **will** be able to boost it!! Once they do so, it becomes a public post
This is not opt-in, it just happens post-update
If this worries you, go audit your followers
