fun fact - the apollo 11 moon landing footage looks like crap because it was broadcast around the world by someone pointing a TV camera at a screen displaying the high quality original footage. if you've ever taken a photo (or video) of a TV or computer screen before, you'll know that the quality always suffers, often dramatically.
the original SSTV broadcast from the moon couldn't be received by standard TV equipment, so it needed to be converted to NTSC/PAL for broadcast. rather than converting it with a decoder or computer (this was 1969, after all), the hacky camera workaround mentioned before was used, and the SSTV broadcast original (shown on the left) ended up looking like the image on the right.
the original SSTV broadcast was archived to tapes, but the tapes are considered lost, and not for lack of searching - likely wiped and reused for other recordings, like what happened with many older doctor who episodes.
