my nerds, i call upon thee for help once more. my computer popped yesterday, fortunately i was *literally* ordering a new one when this happened so it doesnt rly matter. but see, i wanted to sell some of the old components, so i need to know what went pop

it popped when i had the case open and the power disconnected, when i plugged the power back in my speakers went THUNK (not unusual), and when i powered up my pc all the lights flashed for a sec and then, nothing,,,

ive tried a new cable and the same happens. if i mash the on button a bunch of times nothing happens, but if i wait a few minutes and then press the on button, all the lights flash (including peripherals) and the fans jerk for a sec but then it goes off again. any ideas what ive fried??

@envgen Given that after waiting some time, you could power it back on again, however briefly, I suspect the most likely culprit is the PSU. It hasn't COMPLETELY popped yet, but definitely there's something wrong because it keeps tripping its own systems to prevent further damage.

Normally, PSUs are designed so unless they catastrophically fail (blue smoke etc), they won't fry anything else, and modern motherboards often have protection built in for that too. Try a different PSU if you can?

@Nine ive got the new psu for my new build that came today, thats not going to get damaged if i test it on my old potentially dead pc is it?

@envgen Unless ther'es some serious damage causing a massive short that feeds back into the PSU on the motherboard (ridiculously unlikely, you'd probably be able to see the damaage too in that case), and the PSU itself doesn't go "UHHH FUCK NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE let's just put a stop to THAT" and turn itself off as well to prevent damage, then no.

The worst that will happen is that the machine won't turn on at all, meaning it's likely the motherboard in which case.
