still blowing my mind that mods like "Total Chaos" and "Solace Dreams" are actually the Doom engine and not some crafty sleight of hand.

I mean granted they have been heavily modified beyond all belief, like Solace Dreams' furniture is all 3d models, sure and the enemies and bosses (and I guess the player model too??) are actually made of voxels! But the hands and weapons are still a view-sprite (I think?)

As for Total Chaos, again, the weapons in hand ARE just sprites, just cunningly hidden, but those enemies are fully 3d rendered as are the environments wtf.

Like holy shit how. The Doom engine's normal level building doesn't take into account the Z access, and sure you can remove limits, and do crafty tricks to get around not having sectors over sectors in REALLY cunning ways (doom 64 did this a few times to GREAT effect!, but there are EVEN better ways it turns out, with some technical wizardry - and access to the source code >w> )... but fuckin'... curtains/banners blowing in the wind? grass? slopes and curves and all that shit? holy fuckaroons.
