sometimes i think the term "isekai" nowadays just means "person from one place goes to a different place"

which is like the foundation of a LOT of literature, so it kind of dissolves its potency as a subgenre label. the Hero's Journey in general could be termed an isekai

HERE'S A TWIST: think of a piece of narrative media that CAN'T be classified as an isekai, even in the broadest possible sense

an isekai anime where the protag DOES warp between worlds but never, EVER actually notices, and the times they DO engage with the world around them, they're just so... "eh whatev" about it, like it's totally normal...

then it turns out they're from an EVEN STRANGER WORLD THAN THE ONES THEY WENT TO.
