welp at least file extensions for roms are all standard and

*looks at the .bin files which comprise both cd images for both Sega CD and PS1 (with accompanying cue files and sometimes mp3s for audio tracks), and also some Megadrive/genesis roms*

amazing how much easier it is with a keyboard plugged into it tho

everything works finally. it only took a little setting up!
