@lugh sadly, it looks like they didn't... holy shit. the documentary was released like... last friday. hence why there's news stories about it now. and... yeah... basically there's fuckin' gofundmes set up to pay the workers ><;

@jk *"scheduled to launch in Nintendo on September 14, 200Nintendo"

ftfy

@lugh and yes that is the short version and possibly not terribly accurate. but the netflix documentary is genuinely terrifying to watch.

@lugh turns out, this Billy Mcfarlane guy was a conartist, and had defrauded basically everyone. Once it was all over even the FBI got involved. He got arrested, sentenced to six years in jail and is basically 100% destitute now too because they quite literally took every penny he owned pretty much to pay for the MILLIONS he scammed out of investors in the "festival".

... everyone who WENT, all the workers though, never saw a penny basically it seems :/

@lugh nothing, NOTHING was organised, none of the workers got paid, none of the people who gave their houses up for the event got paid, the tents they used for "villas" were actually leftover hurricane tents and got drenched in a rainstorm the night before, so all the mattresses (yes mattresses) were ruined and soaked, basically people got stranded on an island with NO food, NO water, nothing.

Nobody, somehow, died. Nobody got MURDERED either, by some miracle, when it all fell apart.

@lugh okay so... short version, back in 2017 some guy named Billy Mcfarlane with the help of JaRule, set up a supposed "music festival the world has never seen before". Touted as being on a private island in the Bahamas, specifically Pablo Escobar's island, which he claimed he'd bought.

It was an absolute shitshow. "Construction" for the set and the "luxury villas" began like... a few months before the festival itself. The island was changed, most of the bands were never booked or pulled out...

Welp. Just watched a documentary on that old Fyre festival shitshow. Christ. Not sure why it wasn't listed as "Horror" on Netflix. Absolutely chilling. And not in a fun way

@codl
I prefer the red ones myself, they're a bit sweeter and crunchier I find
