The term "log on" in technology was actually borrowed from the logging industry, where to get logs floating down the river into the sawmill, they have to be lined up precisely one by one with the sawblades - a process called "logging on" in industry jargon.
This was borrowed by early computing centers as a metaphor for users queueing up at the reception desk with requests to use the computers.
