hhhhhhhmmmmm okay so... the pad's battery isn't buggered, it's not the firmware... something is... either up with every single cable I've tried, or the usbs on this Rpi3b+ :( the pad jkust keeps disconnecting and reconnecting all the time, though you'd never know unless you saw the disconnect and reconnect messages pop up.

oh goodie there's a firmware update for this pad. I forgot that was a thing that could happen
