As #RedHat is stopping support for downstream #centos builds at the end of the year, a few free to use alternatives are emerging, and pre-existing ones are gaining relevance. Here are the three main ones with the purpose of being RHEL-compatible to fill that gap:

Rocky Linux #RockyLinux

Founded by Gregory Kurtzer, co-founder of the original CentOS project. There’s no foundation or corporation behind it (yet?), but it has a few sponsors and a seemingly very devoted community. A first release candidate was supposed to release today, but I’ve heard that it’s been pushed back towards the end of April according to recent talks they’ve given.

Self-described RHEL fork from the CloudLinux corporation. It has an identical mission statement to Rocky and emphasize that it has corporate support and funding for the project and commited to support its current release, out just today, until 2029, which was CentOS 8’s initial EOL date.

Oracle Linux #OracleLinux
https://www.oracle.com/linux/

RHEL fork from #Oracle, plus the optional Unbreakable Entreprise Kernel, that’s more recent and that support live patching, which is pretty cool. Has been out and on the market since 2006. They also provide paid enterprise support at a lower price tag than RedHat licenses. They like to boast about how much better it is than CentOS, but given Oracle’s history of playing similar tricks that RedHat just did, I wouldn’t blame you for not trusting them.

2/3 of those alternatives are in their infancy, so if you’re an enterprise client of course they’re probably a risk to take, especially since I do believe there’s a good chance only one of them ends up being successful. But it will be nice to see how they evolve.

Also note that while CentOS 8 support ends in December 2021, CentOS 7 in turn lasts until June 2024. If your production still uses this version and does not have an urgent need to upgrade, sticking to it for a bit longer to see how things develop is absolutely an option.

We've now reached far enough through the descent into fascism where our government will openly and brazenly say that people's chances in life here are "attributed to cultural and genetic factors" and that it's not a problem at all, that we're a "model of racial equality" despite this overtly fascist concept becoming normalised in this way from the top. It's all got incredibly Aryan race here, and the worse part is that the majority of Brits will lap this up. Don't let them.
