Got the beginnings of a game idea in the works, leveraging MonoGame once again. I'm going to take a mechanics-first approach: don't develop a feature until it's necessary for the game. That should reduce the scope of the project. No more generalized stuff.

I really like 2D platformers and want to try my hand at making one for real this time. I'm going to bring in the work I did on the Aseprite plugin a while back so I can quickly put together sprite sheets and whatnot. I'm no artist, but... at this point, it'll look however it will.

@Saxxon I totally approve of 2D platformers of course. :p

Got any interesting ideas for mechanics?

@NovaSquirrel That's so hard to answer.. I'm probably going to borrow mechanics from games I like and combine them to form a new experience. I really enjoy double jump, dash, and grapple mechanics. The world of 2D platforming these days has established a really good template.

@NovaSquirrel That said... I don't actually play a whole lot of 2D platformers, my background is mainly 3D arena shooters around the turn of the millennium. So I think I'll take inspiration heavily from that for movement mechanics, and learn what others have done for 2D platformers (to see what works)

@Saxxon My own platformer game is mostly a mix of stuff from games I like, and I play a whole lot of 2D platformers so I have a lot of experience to draw from there. Perfectly fine strategy.

I'd be completely lost if I had to design a 3D platformer though, considering I've barely played any of those.
