Mind blown. Experimenting with NVIDIA's HEVC encoder params with most challenging 8k video on YouTube I can find. 2 frames of "Japan Night Aerials in 8K" encoded crf=28 lookahead 32 frames at 5Mb/sec. That's 1/2 DVD bitrate with 100x res. No noticeable detail loss!

@Rabit And it's probably only going to get better, as H.265 receives the same attention H.264's enjoyed for a long time. Very impressive - even moreso when you actually work out the amounts of data involved, with 5Mbits/s = 610KB/s = 20K per 8K frame, assuming 30fps. =:D

@porsupah yeah, 23.85fps. Just tried some other footage with fast moving gradients (paints mixing) and blockies hit hard, possibly need to experiment with color modes though like 4:2:0

@Rabit Ahh, interesting! I suppose it's much less able to copy & refine vs previous frames with such gently changing source.
