If you truly want to see crime reduced, you would be hell-bent on ensuring inmates leave prison in a better headspace than when they went in.
If you’re focused, instead, on taking as much from them as possible, you’re not really interested in reducing crime. What you’re interested in, is satiating your lust for revenge.

One of the cold European countries... Sweden? Denmark? Norway? - anyway, one of them has a little village, with little chalets, and farm animals that the people living there take care of, and it's a prison. The inmates there get counseling and work therapy, and have the lowest recidivist rate of any prison, anywhere.
