The tortured inner logic of the religious...

1. Why do some believe they have the right to impose their views on nonbelievers? Are all religions authoritarian?

3. Why do some believe nonbelievers are obligated to live as if they were believers?

4. Do bigots use religion to justify cruelty & antisocial behavior? To impose themselves on top of a social hierarchy? To get money?

My own thoughts, unsupported by anything but my own experience:

Holy books - all of them - are the ultimate Rorschach test. You see in them what you want to see. The people pushing this want to have an authoritarian, petty, spiteful, vengeful god, and they have one - it's supported by what they choose to read in their book. It's not supported by the parts they choose to skip over, but that's OK, because they're not reading those parts.
