I've realized the reason I didn't like DS9 as much as TNG or Voyager was because of the "gritty reality" they tried to put into it. Principles are more guidelines, and they can be ignored when they're not convenient. Starfleet has a slimy basement called Section 31. Humans haven't really grown, they've just taken their shitshow on a galactic tour.
Where's the hope?
