Russia uses its courts to silence critics, and now prosecutes about 50 espionage cases a year, almost all of which end in a guilty verdict.

Now they are holding an American, my colleague Evan Gershkovitz, and have refused to grant bail.

Evan is allowed out of his cell only once a day.

He will not get a public jury trial.

I believe they picked him up to be a pawn, and they'll want to trade him for someone else. Same as they did with Griner.
