There's still a weird urge among some journalists to pretend Elon Musk's politics can't be captured by normal labels.
He's very far right! He thinks banal, nonpartisan, routine conferences for election officials are "far left." This is not complicated!

There's a perfectly good label for Musk's politics - "incoherent".
Whatever bright, shiny idea appeals to him at the moment is the new Thing. A bit of right-wing batshittery, a bit of eco-capitalism, and a whole heap of 'Murka-style libertarianism.
