"Slavery existed for 250 years in this country, and itβs only not existed for 150. And, you know, the way that I was taught about slavery, growing up, in elementary school, we were made to feel as if it was something that happened in the Jurassic age, that it was the flint stone, the dinosaurs and slavery, almost as if they all happened at the same time."

@ScottSoCal To be clear, it's Clint Smith who is speaking in that passage about his formative years in New Orleans. I, too, grew up in a world in which there were people, including my own grandparents, who had a living memory of the era of slavery, insofar as they remembered their parents, all born prior to the Civil War, and their parents' stories about that period of history.
