I haven't had to move in more than 20 years. This is the longest (by at least 4x) that I've ever lived in the same place.
@LeatherCubAndrew @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic that sounds really tough, sorry to hear you had to go through all that.
Sounds like the recruiters are just about getting job vacancies filled and not really considering your needs as a human being.
@rekindled I think that's definitely part of it with the recruiters more interested in filling a role, but I actually can't help but wonder if there's a subtle form of discrimination among them on some level because I even tried so hard to make it crystal clear where my experience was and they still reached out to me for roles I'm also unqualified for; I'm suspecting that they didn't trust what I had in writing always assumed that it was outdated...
or potentially some are paid by contact
but thank you nevertheless
@ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic
@LeatherCubAndrew
yeah I’d say fully 97% of recruiters don’t read what you say and/or don’t care. it’s nice when you find the rare one who gives a 💩 and tries to find something that actually works for you
@ashten I've actually wondered one of two things regarding it: either when they "read" it they don't know the skills they are looking for or it's shoved into some AI program that interprets the resume incorrectly potentially putting in biases
@nerkles @LeatherCubAndrew @rekindled @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic if I had a dollar for every recruiter contact I've had where they were wildly off the mark, I'd have my groceries paid for, for a month. Some are just straight up scams, most put a keyword in a search bar and blasted everyone who came up.
I got a message from a very reputable company the other day asking about a position that requires experience I haven't used in well over a decade (in a field where your skills being stale by a few months would put you at a massive disadvantage). They didn't apparently look real hard at my profile.
On the plus side, I'm seeing fewer companies requiring that new recruits be in the office... Which is good, given that these are the tech companies that make the products that make remote work possible. Even a couple years ago (yes, mid-lockdown) that was not the case.
@Cetraria oddly enough between them and the interview I had with the last place I actually applied for, I decided that it was time to leave tech behind and not look back.
That last interviewer for a company I was interested in for a role that I thought that I qualified for stated, "well you don't have enough experience for the role, but we recommend that you apply for our internship which starts next year"... I graduated in 2008, that interview was in 2022... the online courses I took to brush up on skills that my prior employers chose to not utilize were essentially a waste. I still got hit up with "I think you would be a great fit for a senior embedded engineer role I am trying to fill" or "I'm so impressed with your embedded experience"... with my 1 year internship from 2007-2008? with the online courses that I was paying for myself to get into the job I was pursuing since 2008? I gave up last July with embedded (like electronics design) and I hated the other programming-exclusive stuff I got pigeonholed into.
After I got the disability interview scheduled with social security, I also found out that I'm dyspraxic and they actually helped me think about other areas for careers. That's how I got into leatherworking; so while wait for the other stuff to fall into place (hoping it does and soon at that as they are way behind on the medical evaluation) I am learning and practicing leatherworking skills in some projects.
Leatherworking sounds like fun, I hope that all works out!
@nerkles me too! At the very least it can be a relaxing hobby if it doesn't end up being a career as I've enjoyed the classes at shops and projects I undertook
@Cetraria @rekindled @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic
@LeatherCubAndrew @nerkles @rekindled @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic Tech is notoriously sh**ty for people who aren't already employed in the industry. Either finding a first job or finding another after being laid off or quitting or whatever. I'm sorry it's been such a frustrating journey for you.
I have tried on several occasions to get out. But the truth is, at this point it's the only thing I'm suited to, and getting into not-tech seems to be even harder. There will come a point where I'm deemed too old and thus not useful, and that day is probably a lot closer than I realize.
I'm glad to hear you were able to get some career counseling that was actually useful. That gives me something like hope.
@Cetraria @LeatherCubAndrew @rekindled @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic oh yeah I remember seeing a company whose entire product was collaboration tools for remote teams but if you work for them you have to go to their office lol. we live in the dumbest timeline.
@nerkles @LeatherCubAndrew @rekindled @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic I've interviewed with at least half a dozen companies that could describe, and it's wholly possible you could be talking another one entirely. So ridiculous. 😅
@ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic we were in our last place for 15 years. We arrived as a couple and now have 2 kids, 2 cats, a dog and a fish. Since COVID my kids are home educated and my husband now work from home, so we had definitely outgrown the place and needed a bit more space. Hoping we will be able to stay here for a long time and get really settled.
@ScottSoCal other than by my parents when I was growing up (I lived there for 20+ years excluding a 6 month role out of state and my out of state college education (which I have come to regret), the longest I've lived anywhere was 3 years in the city after my parents initially kicked me out around the time I came out, most of the other places were 6 months to a year and really drained my spoons; most of it was due to shenanigans from a now ex boyfriend as of three years ago, but another was due to my rather ablest profit-driven corporate landlord.
I put my foot down with some recruiters wanting me to relocate and they were upset by it and claimed that since I don't have kids that I should go wherever they want me to. I kept telling them that I'm not open to relocation and they ignore that.... even after I told them that I lost interest in the field they want to recruit me for, they still reach out for out of state roles that I don't have any interest in pursuing.
