I've spent 35 years trying to get rid of the racism I was taught, and 40 years trying to get rid of the internalized homophobia. When it comes to the autism I'm still at the "grit my teeth, duck my head, and plow through it" stage.

Well I'll tell you what, it took having a child with multiple disabilities to even start unpacking it for me. I ended up getting my MA in disability studies so I could learn and then raise him with a different mindset and having that intense curriculum really helped challenge me. Most of my professors and classmates were disabled and really modeled pride for me.
