I had someone do exactly that, once upon a time. Yes, I'm middle class (upper middle class in most areas of the country). Yes, I own my home and have had a good job for many decades. I still remember living in my car, and "washing" in the sink in the park bathroom, and drinking a lot of water to fool my stomach into thinking I'd eaten. I don't think I could forget, even if I wanted to.
