I suspect it also just generally makes the thinking process more of a whole-brain process.
I read an article that said what makes an earworm is knowing almost, but not all of a song. Your brain gets stuck in the missing pieces and goes back to it again and again. To resolve, listen to the song, start to finish.
I've tried it. It works sometimes, but not always.

@ScottSoCal @wakame @markusl @weaselx86 @zakalwe @cwebber @ginsterbusch @Tooden @actuallyautistic @SQLAllFather @sentient_water @dpnash @neurodiversity It doesn't work at all for me. It just makes a difference as to how much of the song repeats. If I don't know it all, my brain will either skip back to the part I do know, or muddle through it in low resolution. If I make it to the end, I skip back to the start. Or sometimes my brain just says screw it and loops on the refrain even though I know the whole thing, since having some variety in my assigned listening for the day might be too easy on me.

I think a part of my brain is just bored.
I can get earworms from songs I know intimately as well as from songs where I have just heard small parts.
And... many songs can be "completed" easily if one is a bit familiar with the genre.
