I attended a party yesterday. As usual, I had trouble following people's conversation due to the background noise, zoning in and out. Suddenly I started thinking whether this is an autistic thing. I self-diagnosed last fall. Before that, I've just always assumed everyone has trouble hearing in those situations. Now I started wondering whether NTs can actually direct their attention to the discussion better in those situations. Any thoughts?

@actuallyautistic @LehtoriTuomo I used to be able to do this and I no longer can as easily. I’m not sure what this means. I have become less and less tolerant of noise over the years and often really really struggle. Btw, I did a protocol called safe and sound to help decrease my sensitivity to noise. It’s designed for autistic people.

I'm the same way, I usually don't even like the stereo on in the car, anymore.
Which is odd, because a major point in every car I've had for decades is the premium audio. When I do want sound, it has to be good sound. But mostly I enjoy the quiet. Buying an EV was a revelation - not even engine noise.

@ScottSoCal That's interesting! I like blasting music in a car unless it's a spot that requires more attention such as cities or parking.
