I don't understand the people who are suddenly like, "but Harris has a position on <issue>", as if Trump's proposed policies are even worth considering.

Stop pretending like this election is actually about government policy. Do you want a fascist as president or not? That's the only relevant question.

Harris isn't perfect, no denying it, but we could do much, *much* worse.

Electing the first Black woman president is such a clap back to Trumpism it's a no-brainer.

A symbolic victory is still a victory, and a very important one when everything has been going to shit like it has. Everyone needs a win. Don't be a dumbass. Vote for Harris.

uspol, liberal derangement

Our country has so many fucking issues to address it isn't even funny. We don't have time to wait around for the "perfect" candidate. No such person exists.

We aren't going to fix everything in one go. This is going to be a long fight, even if Harris wins. The most important thing is to make consistent progress. One step at a time. Biden was the first step, Harris is the second. Keep the momentum going.

uspol, liberal derangement

I understand that some people have moral qualms about Harris. I get it. Just remember to keep things in perspective. She's not running against a saint, she's running against a trash pile of a human.

I was reluctant to be one of the "vote Biden or you're a fascist" people because another Biden presidency wasn't progress. Biden was always a stopgap, and I empathized with anyone who felt disillusioned by that. I was going to vote Biden, but I didn't want to and found it difficult to insist that others should to.

But a Harris presidency is a different situation entirely. I fully believe you'd be a fool not to vote for her if you have any desire for improving things.

uspol, liberal derangement

I know Harris probably wouldn't meaningfully improve things in her presidency. She's stuck in the same political morass as everyone else. I'm not an idiot.

But no matter what you care about politically, you have to think about the real steps that are needed to get from *this* reality to your ideal one. I highly doubt that another Trump presidency is a step that will get you closer to your goal.

We got into this mess because the right made consistent, incremental, pragmatic moves. It's a boring strategy, but as has been amply demonstrated, it was very effective. They are getting what they want.

There is no easy solution to the problems we face; no single move that is certain to undo everything that is wrong with this country. We have to be methodical and pragmatic β€” take every possible inch of ground we can get. This is a single battle in a long war.

Normally I'm very sympathetic to idealists. I respect sticking to your values and making decisions based on them.

But this is not a moment for idealism. This is a moment to be pragmatic, tactical, and utterly ruthless. Too much is at stake.

uspol, being pragmatic

When I say I want you to be pragmatic, tactical, and utterly ruthless, I'm not exaggerating.

Right now there are three possible paths to achieve whatever political goal you might have:

1) Trump wins the election
2) Harris wins the election
3) mystery third option

Any plan based on 1 or 2 has approximately 50% chance of success. If you know what 3 is, great, but does that have better odds of success than 1 or 2? Can you do anything to improve the odds meaningfully?

uspol, being pragmatic

Whatever your political goals are, who's more likely to be able to be swayed in your direction, Trump or Harris? What are the odds?

For anything I care about, the odds of me doing anything to change Trump's mind is zero. For Harris, it's a small, but non-zero value. Mystery third option is unknown, but unlikely to be meaningfully greater than with Harris.

So I've got either:
1) 50% chance of having no influence
2) 50% chance of having a marginal influence
3) ?????

@malcircuit

I object! Changing Trump's mind would mean he has a mind. Assumes facts not in evidence.
