So annoying how I can now no longer get anything done this morning bc someone decided to use a 2-stroke weed whacker next door so now there's an incredible amount of noise and my entire apartment stinks like burnt fuel

Started within 5 minutes of me sitting down to get some work done, too.

Holy shit they've been at this for like half an hour. How many plants are there to kill on one piece of property? JFC

I work in landscaping and I can do any job that people do with these types of power tools faster and easier without power tools because THEY ARE SO FUCKING HEAVY

Holding up a brush or hedge cutter over your head is actually much more effort than swinging a machete. I will die on this hill. Dudes just wanna play with power tools.

Chainsaws? Are you kidding me? I can cut down a tree with an axe or an actual saw while you're still tensioning the chain, making sure you have enough oil and so on. Plus the hand tools are statistically much safer. Chainsaws aren't for cutting down one tree, they're for quickly clearcutting an entire forest while the boss hires fewer lumberjacks.

venting

I will never forget the day at work when I cut down all the trees we were supposed to cut down, with hand tools, in the time my colleague spent driving into town to get oil for his chainsaw.

venting

Now some chainsaws are better than others, and this was really mostly a maintenance issue, right? But my feeling is that a LOT of the time saved with power tools gets eaten up by fiddling around with them, changing oil, changing filters, getting gas, getting spare parts, etc. The electric ones are slightly better in this regard, but not perfect.

Hand tools obviously require maintenance too but it's generally much simpler and takes less time (wash off, sharpen, oil before storage)

venting

Actually, the first time I used a chainsaw I was surprised by how slowly it cut. They're powerful, but they also have to cut a massive kerf. Which means they're powerful, but they also have to do way more work than a person moving a handsaw does so... diminishing returns. Hand saws are slower, but they aren't so much slower that we should just stop using them entirely.

@sidereal

Other half was out using an electric chainsaw to trim large branches in the yard. Asked me to come out and help, as it was taking a ridiculous amount of time and effort to get through them.
After I got back from the store with a new chain blade for the chainsaw it took a few seconds per branch.
