It now looks certain that Mexico will have elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, this weekend.
But of course, already, some commentators are suggesting she'll just do the bidding of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who they suspect will be 'pulling the strings' from retirement.
As always, for female leaders, the negative presumptions about competence & independence have started early!
Of course, what will be most important is what she can do for Mexico!
@dinozombie She claims to hold beliefs such as the choice to legal, safe abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, which might put her at odds with her conservative party. In my opinion, tho, it might be because she doesn't cater to the poor and the elderly (a huge chunk of the population). Maybe that's why she was trying to get Maynez to yield his potential votes to her? I'm no political expert, tho
@SteelWool ah we eres mexa, lol yo aca explicandote como esta la onda cuando seguro ya lo sabes. Sorry, my bad
@dinozombie si we, aunque yo todavía me acuerdo de quién votó en contra de prohibir los ECOSIG.
@SteelWool truuuu! Esta pinche clase política está pal perro la verdad 🫠
@SteelWool political parties in Mexico are not so clear cut as Morena = left and everyone else = right. I'd say Morena is more conservative than most other parties just by virtue of having mostly ex-PRI in their ranks. Same thing with the "right wing" opposition (PAN + PRi + PRD, PRD being the most left wing party imo), that is probably the most progressive LGBTQ+ wise atm. It is chaos though since the "independent" organ in charge of counting votes had it's president handpicked by amlo
