"and normies have completely forgotten how to do that."

that sort of phrasing usually implies "bad at"

@velartrill

Maybe it's the other way around.

Those who call people "normies" aren't usually good at talking with others.

Windows update bug thoughts

People who live in glass houses probably shouldn't throw stones.

I've lost count over the past decade of the number of times I've had botched updates render my Linux box unbootable or found the file backups I setup weren't ones I could decrypt or recover from.

Windows 10 has restore points, file history & OneDrive to fall back on. We often don't have equivalents unless we manually set that up for ourselves.

We also only have <1% desktop users to annoy with breakage.

Politicians regularly ask for backdoors to encryption. This poses a severe threat to online security in general: tutanota.com/blog/posts/why-a-

Insecurity

Me: I’m not too good at doing things right now but that’s okay! I’ll work to improve!
Me: *Sees someone do something cool*
Me: I am a WORM. A worthless piece of SHIt. i will. nEVER be good at ANYTHING. I’m a total FAILure.
*sobs uncontrollably*

For some reason is reading out new posts on the federated timeline in TTS voices?? What the fuck? Why is this a thing?

One of my first jobs out of school was a start-up. Was referred by a friend of a friend. Thought it'd be a great opportunity and I'd make considerable cash.

I made $1k/month cash. Was making an extra $4k/month in equity. Part was in stock. Part in an unregistered options plan.

Decade later, they're out of business. Options are void. They're claiming I never earned stock now, either, tho it was reported as income & I paid taxes.

TLDR I learned a lot about how not to do business in that job...

I don't understand something about myself:

Whenever I see certain CW tags, I get irrationally angry at it. Not some extreme anger, by my reaction is usually "No, fuck you."

And it usually takes me a second to calm myself and go "well there are actual people out there that need it."

I really wish i didn't happen. I really hate it. :/

Suggestions for CWs for New Users

Here are some everyday things you might not normally think to CW, but are encouraged to CW here:
-selfies, eye contact
-lewd/sexually suggestive
-food
-mental health
-personal/sincere
-negativity/anger
-job stuff
-money
-politics/current events
-anything that's popular and taking up oxygen (like big TV show finales)
-weed, drugs, alcohol
-exercise

Please also mark +,-,~ for tone! As in, "food, +" for a post about you enjoying a nice dinner.

Project Idea:

A graph of your mastodon statuses as it's shared between users and instances.

@Aerdan Of course they are

@sir

> But some people will... and when it comes out that someone has been, then switching to another is possible with little fanfare. The same does not hold of Facebook et al.

You sure about that? Facebook and co. have disclosed that this was happening for years in their privacy policy. No one read it. No one cared. The problem isn't the source code; it's the people.

@sir

A social network isn’t really a protocol. It’s just some software. And an open-source social network can still collect people’s data.

There’s nothing stopping someone from forking Mastodon and setting up a rouge instance. Most people won’t check.
