a real thought i had while watching educational content on youtube

is there any real reason to make sure all ic chips are the same width? it seems like there's no purpose except to make them work on a breadboard. like, who would ever use a 6502 on a breadboard but by god they made sure you could do it

...........wait i bet there are machines that have to use these chips to assemble stuff. that'll be why

@monorail in addition to all the other great replies, it makes playing lego with sockets easier, especially if you want to do soldered-to-socketed ic repairs later on.
