Merry esbat to those who celebrate the new moon.
Remember, don't look directly at the sun during the eclipse, not even with homemade hacks. By the time you realize you're damaging your vision at all, your eyes are already wrecked, probably for life.
The easiest no-hack no-device way to enjoy the eclipse is to park yourself in a spot with the sun poking through small openings, like under a shade tree, and watch the sunbeams in the shadows turn from round to crescents instead.

re LB: also, it's too bright to see anything! even at 95% occluded (or whatever it was in North Yorkshire). i passed my eyes across the sun for a fraction of a second, like i do sometimes when it's on full strength (don't worry, i'm fine, not even an afterimage), and still i could tell that it there was absolutely nothing that anyone could see without eye protection. that really bright bit that circles around in the rest of the far too bright bit was still circling around, quite unbothered by the presence of the moon in the way.
