@octet33@mastodon.technology Yep! In the US, at least, mental health professionals only go to outside authorities if you're an immediate danger to yourself or others (or in cases of child/elder abuse), and they generally don't want to have to. So even if you are actively planning to kill yourself, they will generally try to talk you down from it, try to convince you to voluntarily go to inpatient if that fails, and only do involuntary inpatient if that fails

@octet33@mastodon.technology Another thing to note is that, in cases of involuntary inpatient for suicidal actions, you aren't going to be committed for life or even long periods of time. It will generally be around a week where they try to stabilize you enough to safely discharge you and have you step down to a partial hospitalization program.

@octet33@mastodon.technology Long story short, even if you are actively suicidal, tell you therapist/psychiatrist/psychologist! They can and will help you in the least restrictive way possible! Whether this be meds (suicidal ideation is why I was put on lithium), talking you down, giving you tools to deal with the thoughts, PHP, IOP, or, in the worst case scenario, inpatient, they will do the least restrictive thing that keeps you alive and well.
