@abgd @squirrel imo probably the second one except it'll be more like a private group honestly, gnu social !groups are more like birdsite lists i'm thinking of birdsite group dms but they function like mastodon dms without the need to @ everyone
@squirrel@boots GS groups are basically hashtags you can subscribe to. I wish we had them here, it's impossible to follow topics right now. That issue on GitHub describes something like FB friend lists but the thing is those are applied to a post then limit all replies - not sure that could even work on masto. Here the visibility settings apply to each message separately and that could still be a problem, even with robust friend lists... :\
