I keep trying to remind people:

Socialist style policies in the US were very popular in the US for the first half of the 20th century. We got Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the FHA, WPA, minimum wage, on and on.

What happened?

The Civil Rights movement, court cases, and laws said they couldn't restrict all of that to white people only anymore. And suddenly, all those government programs of helping people out became deeply unpopular among a major portion of the country who used to be strongly in favor of them. Completely coincidentally, I'm sure.

Racists love government handouts so long as they ensure they only go to "the right kind of people".

In college biology class, when the topic of convergent evolution comes up, the books always seem to like to use euphorbia and cactus as a good example of the phenomenon.

I just learned about the genus Hoodia in the dogbane family, and frankly, i think it's much better example. (compare the Hoodia in pic 2 to the cactus in pic 3)
